It’s quite striking how Caribbean island nations & the greater Americas contain cultural and rhythmic patterns often echoing those from across the Atlantic. This makes it impossible to examine contemporary Caribbean without understanding traditions that had traversed from West Africa to the West Indies.

How does your practice intersect with Africa? 


For Volume 4 we are accepting photos, videos, essays, poetry, fashion, and other media that engage with contemporary interpretations, realizations, and concepts centered around the theme Currents of Africa in the Caribbean, Central and South America. Though not a requirement, we are particularly interested in representing work from artists that are from, part of the diaspora, or currently reside in these regions.

  • Horizontal photograph – WIDTH from left to right should be 1200px at 72dpi, sRGB, jpeg format.

  • Vertical photographs – WIDTH from left to right should be 1200px at 72dpi, sRGB, jpeg format.

  • Label the files with your name and numeration. (Example: firstname_lastname_1.jpg)

  • Include an artist statement detailing the project you are submitting, title of project, and where it was produced

  • High-resolution print-ready files are not needed at this time and will be requested at a later date if your work is selected to be printed.

  • Work submitted was completed within the last 2-3 years 

 

FAQs:

  • Can I submit more than one project? Yes! However we will only choose 1 project per artist. We want to see your strongest body of work.

  • When will I be notified if I am selected for this issue? All selected artists will be notified by mid-May and a list of selected print artists will be emailed to ALL applicants. Photographers that are chosen for this issue may be asked to answer interview questions from our editorial team if the artist statement submitted is not suffice

  • Can I submit a collaborative project? Yes, you can submit a project that has been created by yourself and other artists. Please submit under the name that you would like to appear in print if you are selected.

  • Does the work have to be new and exclusive to Forgotten Lands? Not at all! Work submitted is allowed to have been exhibited elsewhere (non-exclusive to Forgotten Lands), ideally all work was completed within the last 2-3 years.
