Open Studio with Patricia Encarnación
As part of our summer curation NEW WORKS, artist Patricia Encarnación 🇩🇴 (Vol. 08) invited us into her studio space to learn more about her practice and the spirit behind her most recent body of work.
From the Artist:
“I envision Evidence of an Unfinished Collapse as an archaeology of the present, assembled from the vantage point of a future, truly postcolonial world. I turn to quotidian objects—machetes, rum bottles, sugarcane, hair picks—and fragments recombined into vessels. They appear as witnesses to a world that calls itself postcolonial while colonial power continues to organize land, labor, race, desire, and belonging.
Their cracks, burns, wounds, and deteriorating surfaces do not represent a Caribbean in ruins. They expose the current Western hegemonic order as a ruin-producing project, an ongoing (un)civilization built through dehumanization. Yet the objects persist. Through salvaged clay, maroon memory, radical ancestral imagination, and acts of recombination, they become evidence not only of what this order has damaged, but also of what it has never been able to fully govern or erase.”

Dancing the Revolution: From Dancehall to Reggaetón at MCA Chicago

Edra Soto 🇵🇷 (Vol. 08) and Leasho Johnson 🇯🇲 (Vol. 05) are among 40+ artists in this exhibition tracing dancehall and reggaetón from Kingston to San Juan through Panama, New York, and London, exploring the music as a form of protest and cultural resistance across the Caribbean.

Firelei Báez 🇩🇴 🇭🇹 (Vol. 08) and Bony Ramirez 🇩🇴 (Vol. 06) are among 58 Latinx artists in this survey of painting, organized around themes like land, community, and history, presenting a vision of Latinx art that's as expansive and layered as the diaspora itself. Inspired by former U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera's poem of the same name, the show leans into abundance rather than a single, tidy narrative.

At Water's Edge: Thresholds of Memory at Gallery 51

Andrae Green 🇯🇲 (Vol. 04) treats the water's edge as a liminal space, a boundary where land, air, and sea meet and dissolve into one another. For Green, this threshold isn't just a geographic marker, it's a site of memory and transformation, rendered through fragmented scenes and shifting perspectives that collapse past and present into a single psychological space.
Machel Montano: Journey of a Soca King at Central Library
