fracture/repair at ArtSpeak Gallery

Curated by FORGOTTEN LANDS

Vancouver friends! We’d love to see you at the opening reception of fracture/repair. Opening April 5 6:00pm at ArtSpeak Gallery, come meet some of the exhibition artists, co-founders Cory Torres Bishop and Don Brodie, and the incredible ArtSpeak team that helped to make this all possible.

Coinciding with fracture/repair, we’ll also be featured all month long in Vancouver’s Capture PhotoFest, Western Canada’s largest lens-based art fest!

Artist Spotlight: Renluka Maharaj 🇹🇹

We continue shining a light on the artists exhibiting in our upcoming exhibition ƒracture/repair at ArtSpeak Gallery.

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Renluka Maharaj's work engages their family history, in particular the narratives, myths, and folklore brought by the women who migrated from India to the Caribbean as indentured laborers. Gender, sexuality, religion, memory, and colonial history are dominant themes Maharaj investigates through photography, painting, installation, video, and elements of performance to explore the ways they form transnational, multicultural identities.

Maharaj earned their BFA at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and their MFA at the School Of The Art Institute of Chicago. She has received numerous awards including the Martha Kate Thomas Fund, the Presidential Scholarship at Anderson Ranch Center, and the  Barbara De Genevieve Scholarship. Their works are in institutional collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Joan Flasch artist book collection, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, Flaten Museum, Bank of America, Special Collections at the University of Colorado, Boulder as well as numerous private collections. Maharaj lives and works between Colorado, New York City, and Trinidad.
