Julianny Ariza Vólquez - Aquellas Tres Mareas (full video)

Aquellas Tres Mareas (Those Three Tides) is a video art piece that reflects the artist’s interest in rethinking exclusionary models of Dominican material memory, its surroundings, and how these models influence the construction of the collective imaginary. From this idea, Julianny explores visual exercises of recovery and coexistence of the identities of original groups, Afro-descendants, and femininity through sculptures, installations, and paintings. These works establish connections and frictions with representative materials of the main cultures that inhabited the insular Caribbean. In this instance, the artist works with the audiovisual medium for the first time, bringing to life visual elements previously presented in two-dimensional and three-dimensional works from the series: Atesoro (I Treasure), No-objetos (Non-objects), and Amas de leche (Wet Nurses).
